I don’t think I’ve ever had so much fun interviewing OR photographing a band.
I interviewed the three guys behind New Politics – singer David Boyd, guitarist/singer Soren Hansen, and drummer Louis Vecchio – before their first EVER sold out headlining show at Mac’s Bar in Lansing circa April 2013 – watch it here.
While calming David down was like trying to get a kid on a sugar high to sit still (which involved Louis firmly instructing me to take charge), it was like I was getting a glimpse of the band’s raw personality, which doesn’t come through very often in interviews. It was full of giggles & jokes.
At their show that night, that chemistry came to life on stage. Mac’s Bar has the smallest stage I’ve ever seen and their energy took up ALL of it and more, when David did a backflip into the middle of the crowd and executed some major breakdancing, finishing with a hands-free headstand (which is fans would later dub ‘Boyding’):
A couple years later they sold out The Loft in Lansing; that night I was standing at the side of the stage snapping a few photos, and when I reviewed the last photo I took EVERYONE was looking at me… turns out David had invited me on stage to grab a photo of them with the crowd, which of course I gladly obliged to after my ditzy moment of not listening:
New Politics kept moving on up; headlining Saint Andrew’s Hall, touring with Fall Out Boy & Paramore, Thirty Seconds To Mars and more.
Lost In Translation is their new album and they’re touring in support of that this year.
Don’t miss them if they come to your city!! Tour dates here!
