twenty one pilots 6.3.16

“Who the hell are these guys?”

It was 2012 and 2 guys in skeleton hoodies walked on stage at the Majestic in Detroit.

Directly in front of me, a shorter girl with a large mohawk started violently headbanging as the duo called twenty | one | pilots started to play.

I stood there trying my best to avoid the mohawk, and as I gave my sister a “wtf” look the mohawk made it into my mouth.

I don’t know if it was just that or my impatience to see the bands I came for (WALK THE MOON & Neon Trees), but I decided I wasn’t a fan of twenty | one | pilots – despite the fact that Josh did a backflip off the piano!

A few weeks later their first hit “Holding Onto You” made it onto the radio. I couldn’t help but roll my eyes as I realized I f**king LOVED the song.

Then Vessel was released and I was hopelessly obsessed. Talk about a 180.

4 years and several sold out shows later, tickets sold out in advance for their show at DTE Energy Music Theatre – which boasts a capacity of 16,000+!

Their show included all the usuals: backflips off the piano, drumming on the crowd, and just when I thought their show couldn’t get any better Tyler hopped into an inflatable hamster ball and rolled over the crowd, stepping on my head in the process.

After they were cheered back on stage for an encore, they ended with their usual finale, “Trees,” during which I was so close I got sprayed with water from Tyler’s drum.

At this point I’m not sure how their live show could possibly get better, but they’ve continued to surprise me.

Thank you, twenty one pilots, for touching so many lives with your music.
